About this compound

About this compound

SS-31 (also called elamipretide) is a mitochondria-targeting tetrapeptide (a four-amino-acid chain) that homes in on the inner membrane of mitochondria (the cell’s energy “power plants”) and binds a lipid there called cardiolipin.

What it has been researched for

Studied for mitochondrial bioenergetics (how cells make energy) and oxidative stress (damage from reactive molecules), across conditions from heart failure to rare mitochondrial diseases. It has generally been well tolerated in clinical studies of several mitochondrial disorders.

How it is thought to work

By binding cardiolipin, SS-31 is thought to stabilise the folded inner-membrane structure (cristae) of mitochondria, reduce harmful reactive oxygen species, and support ATP production (the cell’s energy currency).

Regulatory status

Elamipretide received FDA accelerated approval in September 2025 (brand name Forzinity) for the ultra-rare genetic disorder Barth syndrome; for all other uses it remains investigational. The material here is an unapproved research compound, not that medicine, and not for human consumption.
